heated mirrors 200 1992

I've just installed 240 power/heated mirrors in my '92 wagon. My owner manual says that to turn the heated mirror function off hit the switch a second time. When I do this, the heated mirror does not turn off. The only way to turn it off is to turn off the car. Can someone offer some advice on what, if any, the problem is? Thanks.
