Defroster not blowing 700

Good Day. 1985 760Turbo Wagon. Auto Climate Control. When shifting control arm to Defrost, air flow does not change. Blows warm air out face vents. Engine idle increases when high fan speed is selected. What controls the change in air flow? Vacuum? Have only used car one winter and am tired of trying to convince my wife the hand she normally uses to shift in our other car can be used to apply a scraper from inside while driving this auto ;)
