@!!??! water pump 700

ok, maybe I am older now and have lost a step or two...

I have installed water pumps in the past on my 1991 740 sedan, no problem. Now, after 4 attempts, I can not get the metal aux pipe to seal properly on my new oem water pump (this is the 1/2+ inch or so metal pipe that fits on the engine side of the water pump - not the o ring at the top). If I put the rubber ring around the end of the pipe and insert into the pump, it rides back over the circular ridge on the pipe and no seal. If I put the rubber ring in the water pump, and then insert the pipe, then the pipe does not appear to seat properly in the rubber ring opening. Needless to say, I have used new gasket sets with each attempt.

I don't remember how I did it in the past -

any suggestions?

thanks.
