Depends what you want to do. One of easiest to master with lots of low cost equipment available is MIG welding.

Tig welding equipment is considerably more expensive.

Oxy Acelylene takes more skill, and at least here in the UK, it's relatively difficult to get hold of he equipment for domestic use.

Realistically if you're going to repair steel car bodywork and weld up domestic lumps of steel I'd go the MIG route. If you want to weld aluminium or braze up complex space frames you need to go more sophisticated.
