960 transmission/speedometer 900

On my 92 960 the speedometer is eratic and then quits. At the same time, the transmission seems to go into neutral for about 5-10 seconds and then start working but it goes into winter mode and will only start off in third gear. I have read about taking out the speed sensor in the rear end cover and clen it to make sure it does not have any metal particles on it. I took it out and it did not have any metal particles on it. I cleaned it and put it back in and it only went about one mile before the speedo quit again and the car went into neutral for a few seconds and alsownet into winter mode. I have checked the trouble codes and they are for a missing or eratic speedometer signal. Any ideas?????
