Early external-regulator alternator interchangable with later internal style? 200 1976

I have a '76 245 with a dead alternator...I think. The exact problem is that it won't excite, and the D+ terminal won't turn the amp light on. It does not charge at all. It's actually fairly new, just out of warranty and used to work fine.

Anyway, my question is, if I find an alternator off a later 240 with the regulator built into the back of the alternator, can I just use that and throw away the old regulator and harness? Or does the early 240 need the external regulator style?
