Check engine goes out in 'Drive'

Hi all,

For those ready for a challenge. The check engine light on my '89 740 will come on at start up and remain on as I sit there idling. When I put the car in "drive" it goes off and stays off until I start it up the next time.

The OBD code stored is for the AMM. I did try the "unplug the AMM" trick and it did indeed run worse, which it should. Why would that light go out in "drive" even if it WAS the AMM?

Anybody heard or seen this before? By the way, the car runs fine and is getting about 24 mpg arund town.
