Repair Safety 200 1992

We just bought a new car, so our 1992 Volvo 240 wagon has become the secondary car. I'm a little less worried about diving in with some repairs, since my wife will still be able to get around in the new car if I screw something up on the Volvo. To avoid doing anything stupid, was wondering what the easiest/safest/best way to jack the car up is? I've seen those little ramps you can drive the car up, but wasn't sure if there was a reason NOT to use them. Thanks in advance...
