My speedo jammed a bit and made a racket off and on in the cold weather. Last Feb, when it finally released after jamming, the drum jumped the brass stop and has displayed 120 mph at all times ever since.

Only five months later,the cluster was pulled to see whats up. After setting the drum back on the normal side of the stop, a drill with a small square bit was used to test the speedo. It seemed to work fine.

Before pulling the original speedo from the car, I picked up a spare cluster (for free -- thanks Joe L at Susquehanna Spares!) to practice dis and re-assembly. The spare speedo displayed 80 mph with the drill on full speed. The original speedo goes all the way up to 120 mph with the drill on full speed. The original speedo was always extremely optimistic -- reading at least 20 mph over actual speed.

It looked a bit complicated to actually swap the drum/spring assemblies. I decided to just put the original cluster back in for now. Although the drum turned smoothly when driven by the drill, there was a bit of clunking when reinstalled in the car and driven by the cable. Perhaps it was the cable all along that was jamming in the colder weather.

Even if a replacement cable solves the jamming issue, there is still the actual vs. displayed speed discrepancy to deal with. Is there a way to adjust the original speedo or would it be wiser to rehab the spare cluster which is cosmetically challenged?
