For months I have had problems with my engine racing. When it got warm and it would race then cut off for half a second in cycles. It would be problematic coming off a ramp from an expressway since in the curve the car would not slow down as much as expected or would accelerate when there was no pressure on the gas pedal .
At a red light the idle would be steady but quite fast if the brakes were on but if the transmission was in neutral or park it would race and cut off. Without resuts I cleaned the throttle body ,then the idle air pump . As a result of a previous posting I suspected that the temperature sender might have to be replaced. My gas mileage was awful and gas prices kept going up.
Finally yesterday after a five minute drive on the expressway I went to the shopping mall. When I came back after less than 30 minutes, the engine was still warm and was doing it as soon as it started. I disconnected the air mass meter to see if it was the culprit, the car went down to a rough idle . I looked at the connector and noticed that one contact at the end of the row did not look normal. Thinking that I would investigate at home, I reconnected the air mass meter, did not touch or try to fix anything. It was my lucky day : everything went back to normal,I drove the same route in the other direction, got off the highway every thing seemed normal again. This morning I drove in city traffic and then for three miles on the expressway and the engine performed normally.
I am tempted to disconnect the AMM to investigate the funny contact but don't want to wake up the gremlin. What would you do ?
