neutral safety switch operation? 700 1992

Hi all,
Sorry for that twitch that just made me mistakenly post that empty post. Does anybody know if a failing neutral safety switch could cause the button on the top of shifter to be locked so that you can't shift out of park? I had this plus no crank the other day and after a few minutes of wiggling it went away. Also, it looks like to get the switch out you have to remove the 4 bolts and lift up the whole shifter assy. Can anybody tell me if there is enough slack and if I will need realign anything underneath after lifting it up?
Thanks,
Robb
