960 Timing Belt Tensioner failure symptoms? S90-V90 1997

I'm getting an intermittant whine under the hood when the car is first started, but not every time. I sounds like a heater/blower motor when the bearing is starting to go. It goes away after 1-3 mins. Hard to pinpoint the source but I'm fairly certain it's not the air pump, A/C compressor, alternator etc. It actually sounds like it's coming from under the plastic cover on the head. I'm worried that it's the timing belt tensioner giving me an early warning. Any input or help is appreciated.
