what does the knock sensor do?

hey
this might be a dumb question but what does the knock sensor do? would a poor idle show that its bad? my idle is poor especially when the engine is cold, once it warms up it gets better but its still a little rough. besides a good tune up (which i have done) what sensors should i look into.
i dont think its the TPS because i have replaced it.
