I bought my '92 960 almost two years ago and it has continually had a problem. When I am driving (sometimes stop & go traffic, sometimes at 65 mph) the engine will just start shuttering like it is only running on 4 of the 6 cylinders. Sometimes it just completely dies. Once this happens, I have found that it is necessary to turn the ignition switch all the way back, wait a few seconds, and then it will start right back up again. This USED to happen only when the air temperature was warmer, and last winter I only had a problem with it once. It also usually happens after I have been driving for a while, but once it happened within a few minutes. I generally drive the car about 75 miles a day, and it is now occurring one to two times per day. A few times recently I have noticed that the idle sounds rough when I start it in the morning, but it revs fine and drive okay.
If the writing on the timing belt cover is accurate, then this may have a '93 junkyard engine put into it at some point. I had it in the shop once, and they replaced the oxygen sensor (which didn't help). They told me that somebody had wired in new wires to the injectors, so obviously this has been a problem for some time. At somebody's suggestion, I switched out the two white relays on the driver's side inner fender (fuel system?), but no improvement. This has otherwise been a great car for me, and I hope to get another 75k miles on it so I can hit the 300k mark. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to solve this problem? It is difficult for me since it won't stay dead to diagnose. I have another '92 960 that got wrecked, so I can try out any parts with little or no cost. Somebody said maybe the crankshaft position sensor??
