cooling system 900 1996

temp gauge stays at normal range all day but after running car for a long period of time and when i shut the engine off and open the hood i see the coolant in the reservoir over flowing and running down the body and soon as i start the engine i see the coolant coming back down between the min and max marks. could it be a thermostat or something more serious. the car never overheats when driving cross country. thanks keith
