"I just ordered a Valio alternator from Rotem at Alleuro. They last better. "
Agreed. The alternator that was on the car when I bought it in Feb 2005 was a Valio. It ran an unknown number of events with the prior owner, 7 events last season, and part of the first event this year before taking a dump.
I was tempted to buy another one just like it, but the deal at O'Reilly Auto Parts was hard to beat; 40 bucks for Bosch rebuild with a lifetime guarantee. I had already gone through 2 rebuilds this year, this would have been the third. I thought I would give O'Reilly a break and see if I could fix this one without spending a great deal of time. As it turns out, I fixed it quicker than I could have driven the 8 miles to the O'Reilly store and back.
BTW, in the spares that came with the car was another Bosch core, so I used it to buy a spare alternator. That way I always have a fresh rebuild (however shoddy they may be) in the parts box at the track. And I'll theoretically never have to pay for another alternator.
