ERRATIC FUEL GAUGE S90-V90

Hey Guys,

I was looking for some help with this issue.
I took my car in for a 60k service with a local mechanic that specializes in Volvos.
When I got it back and I used it the next day, I noticed that the fuel gauge was way off. I had a full tank, but it was reading that I was close to empty. After driving it, it would correct itself, then dip to a level that I know was incorrect.

Could a change of a fuel filter produce this problem? We've also had extreme heat in the Northeast lately, so could that be part of the problem?
How difficult is it to replace one?
Thanks in advance for your help.
