Ok, I am very mechanicaly inclined, however I bought a 1978 Volvo 244DL a couple of years ago from my landlord. It had been sitting for a couple of years, but my friend and I were able to get it started long enough to drive for about three miles to my house. I found out the next day I was lucky it was raining profusely that night I drove the car home.......One of the fuel lines under the car was rusted through... I found all kinds of sediment in the tank, I did a good cleaning. I then went to the junk yard and I got another fuel pump, which was working great, It seems that I remember turning the key to on, (Without attempting to start the vehicle) for a few seconds I am sure that I heard the pump activated!?? I re-assembled the tank with pump, and I had the car running for a brief number of days, but I never got it to run normal, it always seemed like the fuel was lacking to feed to the engine, although I had good fuel pressure to the the filter, It wasn't getting through the distribution box, so I kept trying to find another car to get that part. Meanwhile I also had a problem with the fuel pump relay, and since all of this and a year passing by I am starting fresh with another attempt to fix these problems.
Now at this time I need to know can anyone tell me if the fuel pump should activate when you turn the key, and what to check for and how to fix this problem. When I try starting the car or turning the engine over, I then and only then get fuel flowing. When I release the key the relay disengages thus stopping the fuel flow. Also there doesn't seem to be much fuel flow as compared to before. I am not a quitter, and would love to report this car "Is running" and will do so hopefully with your help!!! P.S. I'm trying to fix to sell! Thanks!
