Missing front muffler - important? 200 1991

My son's girlfriend bought a 244 (we told her she better buy a Volvo if she wants a chance in this family...) and it does not have the front muffler, just a straight pipe. I don't know the consequences of this (more back pressure, less?) but when she had work done recently, I recommended that she have the front muffler installed - presumably Volvo put it there for a reason. The shop she took it too just did a little welding where there is a break and charged her $90. I noticed there is nothing holding it up for quite a while because the front muffler has hangers to attach to the body, therefore there is pressure on the pipe. Any suggestions to either hang it up or replace the muffler. I told my son that FCPGroton has from the converter back for just $110, and they should get that & install it. He thinks it will be hard without a lift - he's only 24, I think he can do it.
