Rear torsion bars-how to replace? 1800 1965

Howdy, I've got my 2 torque (torsion ?) rods ready to re-install with new rubber bushings. How do you manage to fit the rear most bushing on with enough room to put the washer and nut on? I put the front of the rod in and put the bolt in. The donut shaped bushing on the front of the rear axle slips on, but when I attach the bar through the hole in the bracket, there is not enough room to place the outer donut bushing. Any help is as always, much appreciated. The Volvo part catalog states that they are "rubber cushions" on the "torque rod",
part #653168-5".
