Overhead light in car is a mystery? Can someone help solve? 700 1992

When I open the door, the 2 maplights come on. When i close the door they go off. But the problem is the single bulb in the back of the over head light cluster. When i push the switch towards the front of the car it comes on and stays on like it should. When i move the switch to the middle it goes off like it should. BUT when i move it towards the rear of the car it should turn on with the doors open and off when the doors are closed. It does not do this. It comes on and stays on with the doors open but it wil not go off when the doors are closed , just as if the switch were moved all the way to the front. Any suggestions on how to fix?
