Help,My 94 940 died on the road today 900

My daughter was driving our 94 940 NA today on the highway when it suddenly lost power, all service indicators lights illuminated and it stopped running.
She was able to coast to a safe shoulder area and we arranged to have it towed to a yet undetermined mechanic.
The engine started afterwards but only idled and nothing occurred when it was put in gear. There was no engagement of the tranny.
By virtue of the fact the engine started, I rule out the timing belt.

Any ideas as to what occurred??? Thanks!
