960 Gas, Outside Temp. Gauges& Compter off

Hello to all.
'97 960 Wagon gas gauge is reading different all the time.
Also, outside temp. gauge fluctuates from 80 to 140.
Found temp. sensor under car, wrapped around a bumper support.
I think these two gauges are connected to a relay?? I read it somewhere and am looking for info again.
Also, have been waiting for my computer to "reset" after battery change.
Any ideas as to how many miles I need to put on before I'll get full read out.
Got about 150 miles on it since battery change.
The first window on the Smog Techs. computer read out screen opens but the second with the Alt.read out doesnt come up. "Not recognized".
Volvo mechanic read same thing.
Volvo Mechanic and Smog Tech. both say to drive the car some more and wait for it to reset... I'm driving and rechecking...
Any thoughts appreciated.
