electrical AC problem 900 1996

I have a 1996 960 Wagon. I parked it for about a month. Came back and the battery was shot. I knew it was getting weak, so I put a new battery in. The AC worked fine when I parked it a month ago, but now the AC doesn't work. About 30 seconds after I start the car, the compressor kicks on for about half a second then back off. It won't come back on unless I turn the car off and back on with the same result--on for about a half second then nothing. I put a jumper on the pressure switch with no change. I'm sure it's an electrical issue, but I'm not sure where to begin. I took out the climate control unit, but the solder joints all look good. The small ambient air sensor near the fan reads 9.9K when in the house (72 degrees), which I think is OK. I've looked through a bunch of posts, but the usual problem seems to be running for about 10 minutes before shutting off. Mine only runs for half a second. What now?
