overdrive

When I bought my car the overdrive arrow was on and the fuse was blown. I replaced the relay and then the fuse and the fuse didn't blow but I still had an arrow and no overdrive. I sent the relay back to see if it was bad and it was but I may have blown it by plugging it in. I have a new relay but I don't want to plug it in and blow it again if I have another problem. What could be causing this? I'd really like to fix this myself if I can and I need this overdrive fixed. I have an out of town highway trip to take soon.
