My left rear disk won't come off; it has some significant grooving. Inner brake shoes keep catching on what seems to be a raised lip on inside of drum. No matter which way I angle it and tug on it, the rotor won't come free. It moves and is not frozen, but is hanging up on the shoes inside.
I posted on that question here many months ago and received suggestions to try a screwdriver between disk and spindle, and also a screwdriver into the existing holes in the disk to see if I could pry the shoes away somehow. No luck.
I left the rotor there with new pads installed. That was around 1/14/2006. It's still there.
If I eventually decide I MUST remove the disk I might cut away the center by cutting between the existing stud holes and other holes at the center of the rotor, using a Dremel. As I never worked on the inner drum brake I figure there's a good chance this method would likely damage the inner works so I never did it.
Hmmm. Maybe drill two holes aimed at the centers of the two shoes. Then press the shoes in from the outside with a thin screwdriver. I wouldn't feel bad about making a small hole in the shoe, and might even be able to manage the job without going through to the shoe's backing plate. Just be ready for significant drill time through that rotor.
