solved: valve train noise after head gasket and cam swap 200

Gentlemen,

Tried to find the old posts, in order to refresh the good people of the board, with the search engine but could not.

Decided to post the results for those who remember.

Well the clacking noise following a head and cam swap has finally been discovered. Read on.

Having done two head gaskets in as many weeks, I feel like an old pro at that particular task. For any who fear pulling a head, doing a timing belt, or messing with cam timing, it is pretty easy if you have the proper tools and know a few tricks, tips, and techniques.

10 hours the first time. 7 hours the second time. Each without cutting a single corner, torque setting, valve adjustment, or anything else.

Fortunately, with a spare head and some spare cash, I was up and running in a little more than a week -mostly due to wait time at a very rebutable machine shop.

The clacking nosie in the "old" head (with only 400 miles on a full rebuild) was due to: improperly reamed valve guides. CRAZY!

The valves were locking up when the brass guides got hot (brass shrinks when heated) and the result was massive clacking due to valve lock up. DOUBLE CRAZY!

One lesson I learned: do not shop for a machinist by price! Cost me more than double (in time & money) in the end.
