i got the slap

i am pretty sure now that the clack noise on my 91 240 wagon is piston slap. it has been doing this since 50k miles and now at 225k miles it doesnt go away anymore when engine warms up. question-how long does something like this go before it destroys the engine? how do i know when to quit and get a used engine? thanks carl
