Hi,
My 1993 940 Turbo wagon is having intermittent problems shifting into 4th gear. Most of the time, the transmission is fine. The problem with 4th gear occurs when I leave the car parked for about an hour. Here is the usual sequence of events:
1) I drive the car for about an hour (and the transmission shifts normally through all gears).
2) I park the car for about an hour.
3) I drive the car, and for the next 10 to 45 minutes, it will not shift into 4th gear.
4) Usaually, after driving for 10 to 45 minutes, the car will begin shifting into 4th gear normally.
After reading the 700/900 Fact, I tried replacing the overdrive relay and changing the transmission fluid. I believe the problem is with the overdrive solenoid, but I do not understand why the problem is intermitent. After the car is parked, I have tested for proper operation of the sonenoid by listening for the "click" from underneath the car while pressing the OD button on the gearshift knob. Here are my results:
1) Parked for 15 minutes, can hear "click"
2) Parked for 30 minutes, can hear "click"
3) Parked for one hour, NO "click" sound
4) Parked for one hour and 15 minutes, NO "click" sound
I plan to have my mechanic replace the overdrive solenoid. Is this a good idea or are there other (i.e., cheaper) steps I should take first in trying to solve this problem?
Thanks, -- Tim
