Hard cold start (code 123) 700

1990 780 with B230FT. Started idling real rough, especially when cold, but basically all the time. I checked the codes and had a 123 (coolant temperature sensor). I bought a new one and installed it (that was fun, under the intake manifold with other stuff in the way). Result is that cold starting is not good, starts and wants to die. I have to gently give her gas to keep her running. Once warmed up, the rough idle problem is improved. Here is the main question...are there different sensors? The one that I removed was a different color than the one Advanced sold me. Old one has black plastic connector and the new one is tan colored. I seem to remember that different years (computers) needed different sensors, but I can't find where I read that. Any other suggestions are very welcome. Thanks in advance.
Jim
