cruise control 900 1993

My cruise control doesn't work. I probably need a new cruise control module, but I wanted to see if someone else had this problem before I buy a new cruise module because I wondered if it could be a vacuum pump or speed input problem. When I push and hold the set button for acceleration it will pull on the throttle and decrease speed slowly. If I release the set button, the throttle releases most of the way and the speed drops much more quickly. Of course the brake pedal will release the throttle all the way. If anyone has had this type of failure, I would appreciate advice. I don't want to buy a new cruise module and still have the same problem. I don't think that there is any way to test the module.
