Failing Power Steering Pump? 1986 Pump on a 1995? 900

What's the liklihood that my power steering pump is wasted after the return hose cracked on a highway trip and went un-noticed? (until the next morning). The fluid was lost as a slow leak, only squirting out on hard left or right (none on return trip)

Despite replacing the return hose and refilling the fluid (it was not *completely* dry) the car's pump still makes some odd noises. The car seems to steer okay, but offers some noise and resistance when making very low speed turns (backing out of parking spaces, etc).

I was initially concerned that the replacement hose is too different - The new return hose is a bit shorter than the original, but the fittings all line up.

If my pump is damaged, can I replace it with the pump I saved from my '86. Both have cam steering racks. The pump itself looks identical, but with 9 years difference I worry.

Any information or suggestions are appreciated.
