It's a waste of money *IF* your car doesn't need it.

Pinging with normal timing is an indication your engine needs it. Using lower octane and retarded timing might result in worse MPG and offset any $ savings.

My old Jetta (VR6 motor, what a gem) had a knock sensor and could adjust the timing to compensate for varying fuel octane. In cooler weather it hardly made a difference. But in hot weather there was a very noticable drop in HP when running 87 octane as opposed to 91.
