How do I use a meter to check if the alternator is charging? 200 1990

I changed the alt about 50,000 miles ago and put in a stock volt meter in the dash at the same time. Last week the needle started dropping into the red zone, but the idiot light did not come on. I'm wondering if the gauge may be malfunctioning. What setting do I put a multimeter on to check to see if the alt. is charging correctly? Thank you all.
