Hot idle problem - 74 164E 140-160

Now wait a second...

If the AAV is stuck closed and you set the idle hot, it won't idle cold.

If the AAV is stuck open and you set the idle hot, it still won't idle cold... but you'd never get the hot idle to come down to spec.

If the AAV is stuck closed and you set the idle cold, it will idle fast when hot.

If the AAV is stuck open and you set the idle cold, it will also idle fast when hot. Very fast.

I'm not seeing how a failed AAV can cause the car not to idle when warmed up. This is probably a shortcoming on my part. ???

BTW, I had two consecutive 1800ES in my shop that had 160-degree thermostats installed. Those are not hot enough to completely close the AAV. I had to install 180-degree 'stats to get the hot idle to where it should be.
