have 2 960's approaching 250k.the 92 has an oil cooler radiator(not the issue).
my 94 has cooling lines going to the oil cooler.i did get the housing gasket/o-ring for the 94.with almost 250k i just by-passed the cooling lines due to a leak from the front crank gasket.the leak was dripping on the coolant lines causing the coolant hoses to swell(thankfully not leaking on the timing belt).i was unable to find the correct sized lines in silicone form.had 1/2" silicone lines and now they're starting to split where connected.about to replace the housing o-ring,but can't find torque info using the archives.
due to the milage on my straight 6,i'm now running castrol 20/50 and as of last night i by-passed the cooling lines to the oil cooler for the long drive to the south.
question is:will running without a cooler create a problem, and what is the torque for re-attaching the oil filter housing.i live in the country,so i'm not that concerned sitting in stop and go traffic and having the oil heat up.plus, about to make another long distance drive to Florida.
I'm running 20/50 in both 960's,and in winter will switch to 10/40.
cant beleive the milage i've accrued from both my 960's,so much negative attention protrayed about the 960,caused me to leave for a while.
i spend most my time on roadfly dealing with my 635CSi BMW(2 635's & 2 960's in the current fleet).the 960's just keep on racking up miles.
960's rule, regardless of the negative input.closing in on the 1/4 million mile mark,i still give mine a work out.getting ready to take it on another 2k drive.
how many other marque of the vehicular food chain can you depend on gettimg such high milage in 100's of thousands of miles?i drive a BRICK for the(self perceived)and documented safety factor, the longevity is merely a bonus!!!!!
i will come come back to brickboard if i don't take a dogging for the fact i drive a 960.just reached a point that if you owned a 960,that you owned a piece of junk, and i tired of it quickly.there have been many instances of individuals getting the proverbial lemon,i guess i got lucky on the 2 960's i own.
out of the 6 bricks i've owned,3 are still on the road.2 240's were totaled in which we survived, and the other i just got tired of turbo replacement.
thanks for reading rant.whether you care or not(regarding the 960)volvo forever, and for life.wife has had her(960)long enough and indicating she likes the Crysler 300.i only hope i can keep her in a Volvo.i do not like the 300,but i do like the new charger and the Magnum wagon somewhat.we all know they will not live as long as a brick.and once again,,safety is my choice.after a near fatal accident in my 1st bimmer.the boxy brick suddenly became very appealing, and my daughter is still with us from her serious collision due to some dumb a$$ pulling in front of her while she was legally cruising at 55mph+.
