Downpipe and cat connection style 200 1991

How many different kinds of downpipe to cat connections are there? I replaced the cat which required a sort of tapered donut to fit the downpipe. I can't make this work with the new cat. Tried without any gasket no good. Now trying a triangular gasket but I'm beginning to think that the relatively new downpipe installed two years ago isn't compatable with the brand new cat (both from FCP Groton). Has anyone else run into this?
