Still problems w/ 89 245 a/c switch 200 1989

Hello- after living with it for weeks, it's time to get back to figuring out what's going on with the a/c. Earlier, I replaced the blower motor. Since then, the a/c is not engaging (not in a charming way, it's not switching on.) I have disassembled the control, and I notice a small relay-ish thing on the back of the ac temp control switch. The thingy (technical term, I know) is like a very small door- it moves readily when I manuever it, but does nothing when I start the car, and turn the knob to "cold." Any ideas? How could I test this?

Next- how can I test my vacuum? I am 98% certain the actuator hoses are in the correct spots, but none of them seem to do anything.

Thank you- I'd take this to my Volvo guy, but he said I don't need him at this point. My wife is convinced he's punishing me for attempting this on my own.

Thanks,

Michael
