Invisible spark plugs DOHC engine 700 1990

Thought I'd take a quick look at the plugs in the new 16 valve. Popped the hood, looked high and low. No plugs. I'm pretty sure the car has spark plugs - there would be a definite lack of performance if it didn't. So I'm guessing that they're hiding.

Seems to be too likely suspects for the hiding place. The wires seem to go under the rectangular cover in the middle of the two valve covers - the one with the two large cross slotted screws. There is also a large metal cover/shield over where I would normally expect the plugs to be.

Anyone have any guidance where the little buggers are, and the best way to get to them?
