740 gl tranny is fuct 700

My girlfriends 88 740 GL transmission is gone. it gives you drive only when the engine is running,nothing else. reverse is shutting it off and pushing e-brake does'nt work either so you can imagine the hassle this has become at gas stations,parking lots ,etc. I am a carpenter that doesn't know much about cars especially swedish ones, but I am handy with tools and I don't mind a challenge . any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
