Intermittent power problem 200 1984

I'd appreciate some help. My 84 245 experiences intermittent severe lack of power problems. Fuel pumps have been change as have the plugs and wires. A couple of reputable Volvo mechanics say there is nothing wrong with the car (the problem has'nt reared it's ugly head the serveral times they've driven it). The problem will occur in two ways:

1) Pulling away from a stoplight... I press on the accelerator and there is very little there! Acceleration is VERY slow and faint backfire "sound" will occur. As it makes it's way through the intersection power returns and the problem may not reappear at the next stop.

2) Cruising on the freeway on level ground... speed drops off significantly without backing off on the accelerator. After a few seconds or when I switch the overdrive off the problem goes away (power returns).

Any suggestions?

Thanks
