Pilot bearing retaining clip 200

Doing an engine swap: 92 into an 87. The 92 had an automatic. I am fitting the 87 manual trans flywheel to the 92 engine. The new crankshaft has a groove for a retaining clip to hold the pilot bearing in place. The old engine did not, and I didn't find any retainer when I pulled the old bearing; granted the bearing came out in pieces, so there was not much forensic evidence to go on. My question is, is the retainer needed? I would like to get this thing together this weekend, and Volvo is not open for business. Thanks.
