my 240 transmission is slipping, i dont know what happened! 200 1981

i was out driving my 240 today, i came to a stop sign, (at this point, everything was fine) then, i push the gas, and i dont go anywhere, i push again, and make sure im in drive, and nothing happend, i had to pop it down into first to get it moving, and even then, it was slipping horribly, what wrong here? i heard some sort of POP noise when i tried to take off.
