engine mounts 200

The way to replace the 240 engine mounts has been detailed a lot in this forum. If you do a search in the forum archives, you'll find this. I've done it on my '86 240 and it just took time and care to do it safely. Here are a few suggestions.
1. the safest way to support the engine is from above. I think Art Benstein posted images of his arrangement. He had a double 2x6 across the fenders with a through bolt hooked to the engine lifting ring near the thermostat. I lifted my engine with a jack underneath the pan. You only have to lift a small amount, just to take the weight off the mounts. DO NOT TRY TO RAISE THE ENGINE WITH A JACK PLACED UNDER THE OIL DRAIN PLUG!!!!! (Those of us who have been here a long time remember the great hubub when someone pushed their drain plug up into the pan.)

2. Do one side at a time

3. Don't put your hand where it could be trapped if the engine slips.

4. I used Scantech brand mounts and the right mount failed quickly. I replaced it with one from the dealer. The Scantech rubber seemed weak. I think you would be wise to use OEM, you don't want to do this twice.

5. The way I did the job was to remove the engine mount and the brackets fastening it to the engine and the frame. Then I removed the old mount and put the new mount on the brackets and reinstalled them in the car. The right side is the most crowded. It helps to take off the oil filter. I only needed standard sockets and extensions, nothing exotic.
