Synchro Compatibility -- M45 with M46 200

I have a later M45 (same spline count as the M46) in a car with a bad synchro. I also have an M46 that came out of my 86 wagon that has great synchros, but the input shaft bearing is destroyed (only 302k miles on it before I finally swapped it -- wussy bearing). Since the M46 is laying around (I will be putting the bellhousing to new use), can I scavenge the 1st/2nd synchro off it and put it into the M45? I will only be using the M45 for a little while longer until I replace the trans with a T5.

The M46 is out of an 86 245. It is not the HD or aluminum version -- just the run-of-the-mill trans out of a DL. The M45 is from god-knows-what but I think it was out of a later 2-door car before the M46's were introduced. Synchro between 1st and 2nd is baddish.

Also, anybody know when the M45 spline counts changed?

Thanks for any info in advance. Cheers.

...Brian....
