The 71 1800E is finally on jackstands and blocks. I was just getting a little too scared to drive it. I found some amazing rust under it, and was surprised to find that the vacuum canister was completely eaten away. Front spars were eaten through on the bottom, crossmembers were all but gone, inner fender wall holey. Pretty typical zombie corpse. But, as usual, the mechanical brains and muscle are in excellent condition, just awaiting a new "host" body.
The plan is to eventually pull all the systems and transfer as much as possible into my 122 wagon. I really like the combo of and M41 and the D-Jet and want that kind of ride for my 67 P220.
Considering the new baby, finishing grad school, and starting my new job, I'm thinking that it's probably more reasonable to pull and mate the M41 to my existing 1/2 million mile B18 and leave the B20E in the carcass until I figure out how to stop time from passing around me.
I started to photography and remove some engine bay components already. However, in taking out some bits, I realized just how cramed everything is in the P1800. I'm not sure how I'm going to get anything out of this car from the top or bottom.
So, considering that I do not intend to save the body (not much there) what's the best way to free the motor and/or M41? Would it be simipler to rent a hoist and maneuver them both out as a unit, or am I better off taking the M41 out first? If I'm going to all the trouble, would it be better to just switch the whole motor into the 122 while I'm at it? Would cutting the nose off the car with a reciprocating saw or L-grinder make the whole process easier?
any advice is appreciated.
