removing the alternator pulley

Brian - Great that you got the thing freed. I was worried, since I know that's a tough problem. A little nervy, too, on your only driver.

Since you have the torch, and some "Mechanic's Zen", here is the candle wax system. I first heard of in on the BB some years back, and used to remove the drain plug on a differential housing.

Have a candle handy, not lit. Use the torch to warm the plug and its surroundings. Not hot, just warm enough to melt the wax.

Rub on the candle, see that the liquified wax runs into the thread joint. Warm and rub again. Done right, the wax will be drawn into the joint by capillary action.

Of course, warming the pulley and not the shaft was a good idea, too.

Another use of heat as a helper. Changing front wheel bearings. When the rotor hub (1983 240) is ready to receive the new rear bearing race, I put the rotor into the oven at minimum heat, and the bearing into the freezer. After an hour or so, wear work gloves and pull the rotor out and lay it where the race can be tapped in. It will still need tapping around, but way less than if all is a room temp.
