lots of pinging, engine revs, then stalled 200 1986

Hi all,
A novice (slowly gaining knowledge) in the dark here.

After a succesful (I hope) breather box/engine harness replacement in my 1986 240DL I took it for about a ten mile drive with no noticeable problems, then yesterday (hot day) after a few miles I heard some mild "pinging" upon acceleration. The pinging became increasingly frequent over the next 1/2 mile or so then at a stoplight the engine (on its own) went from the normal 800-850 rpm idle to about 1500 rpm briefly then stalled. No start. Starter turns over but it won't start.

I'm (almost 100%) postive that I did not mix up the knock sensor with the temp sensor. Other than that I'm guessing distributor? timing belt? then what???

Before I tear into things any tips on what this may be would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve
