If you don't mind probably having to tow it, it's likely worth it. I've paid that for a volvo, and had all kinds of fun. I love the interior of the '70, great visibility all around and a seemingly spacious interior. I like the rear pop-outs on the pre-71 wagons, but find that the 4-door windows are restricting w/ minivents. That you might not welcome, but you could swap doors with a 73 or later. Does he say what the carb(s) are on it? There're several examples of that grill on ebay presently, and usually are. That's the wagon body to have, in my opinion. But that stupid window glue...
Parts are widely available and pretty cheap. To make a comparison, if I may, as I recently picked up a Citroen (mutant brick) wagon: Volvo brake pads run under $30. Citroen brake pads get close to $300.
The brake booster is the biggest problem I'm having to solve. Tires were a minor challenge for the 4.5" wheels. Ask someone with a bug where they got their 165's. Found mine @ pep boys, don't know if you've got that near Chicago.
Luckily there seem to be plenty of 140 series parts cars offered up for cheap.
Bought a few cars now I've found on craigslist. Met some delightfully unique people, and have never been burned.
