scored front rotors 700 1986

The family dolt, me, let the front pads wear down to the rivets. Now, I have a set of very heavily scored front rotors. Volvo discourages machining of the rotors, and every time I do it, I regret it. In this case, it appears I have three choices...replace pads and leave the scored rotors alone, replace pads and machine rotors or replace pads and rotors. Has anyone dealt with scored rotors before. Any luck just leaving them in their scored state? What effects will this have on braking?
